Estoy seguro de que si miráramos atrás en busca de errores encontraríamos un elevado número de ellos, pudiéndonos imaginar esa grandeza que podríamos haber alcanzado de haber obrado diferente, de haber sido menos perezosos o más consecuentes con nuestros objetivos… ¿Pero cuál es una de las razones que siempre acompaña a las malas decisiones? La complacencia.
A lo largo de nuestra existencia enfrentamos un elevado número de elecciones, algunas con mayor trascendencia que otras. Así que es necesario enfrentar las decisiones cotidianas con algo más que un sí. Porque la realidad es la siguiente, al aceptar alguna cosa, estamos negando otra. Y siendo complacientes, fácilmente aquello que deseamos seguramente sea de lo que nos alejamos.
Tenemos un tiempo limitado, tanto en el número de horas que tiene nuestro día, como el número de años que tendrá nuestra vida (de esto no podemos saberlo con exactitud). Y afortunadamente, eso nos conduce a escoger que camino tomar, que acciones realizar y por qué sueños luchar.
Así que ten por seguro, que nuestra mejor arma o escudo para esto, es esta palabra: “No”. Se nos olvida a menudo el poder que tiene ser capaz de elegir que quieres y que no quieres hacer, donde vas a invertir tu tiempo y con qué fin. Aléjate de aquello que no quieras hacer, porque de lo contrario te acercarás a esta realidad que es la Jaula de Ovejas.
Hace bastantes años una escritora entregó el manuscrito de una obra a diferentes editoriales, y a pesar de ser una gran obra, fue rechazada por todas ellas. Algunas le sugirieron que realizara cambios para mejorar la obra o para que encajara con los estándares de la editorial, de este modo si que estarían dispuestos a publicarlo.
El Arte de Decir No para Alcanzar Objetivos
Muchos escritores habrían realizado estos cambios sin dudarlo, cegados por la posibilidad de publicar un libro, abandonando su convicción. Afortunadamente no se comporto como muchos escritores y les dijo que no. Así fue como nació Harry Potter.
Regresando a la metáfora de La Jaula de las Ovejas, el pastor te llevará a los prados más verdes y a los ríos más claros, pero siempre con un objetivo en mente, a menudo diferente al tuyo. Sin duda es reconfortante dejarse llevar, disfrutar de los pequeños placeres que se nos brindan y aprender a convivir con las penurias que nos puedan llegar. Y aún así, no, no es lo que yo quiero, y sin duda tampoco es lo que quiero para ti.
Existe algo llamado instinto, y a menudo lo olvidamos o lo ignoramos. La gente no te recomienda lo que es mejor para que te conviertas en la persona que quieres ser, sino aquello que te ayudará a ser lo que quieren que seas. Está bien decir que no, está bien no aceptar un trabajo, siempre y cuando coincida con tus objetivos.
No pretendo ignorar la resistencia que se os puede presentar si no estáis acostumbrados a decir que no. Trasladar una negativa a un tercero suele generar a menudo un momento de incomodidad o tensión, por ello os brindo tres formas de poder hacerlo.
Di "No" Utilizando el Método 0-1-0
Como ya he mencionado anteriormente, cuando rechazamos una petición las personas involucradas afrontan un momento de tensión. Esta es una de las principales razones por las que muchas veces respondemos de forma complaciente. De modo que el objetivo de este primer método es eliminar o reducir al máximo esa fricción.
Para ello enmarcaremos nuestra negativa, entre dos respuestas de carácter positivo. La idea es empezar con un comentario agradable, trasladarle tu decisión final justo después y finalizar con otro refuerzo positivo.
Pongamos un ejemplo, “Agradezco que hayas pensado en mi para hacer esto (positivo). Sin embargo, por disponibilidad me es imposible comprometerme con esta actividad (negativo). Si mi volumen de trabajo disminuye en un futuro estaré encantado de ayudar (positivo)”.
Después del "No" Ofrece Alternativas
Otro forma de afrontar esta situación, la cual considero que está un paso por delante de la anterior, es ofreciendo alternativas. No es necesario edulcorar la respuesta, simplemente después de decir “no” comunicas que la otra persona aún te importa y estás dispuesto a ayudar de alguna manera. Puede ser redirigir a la persona a alguien que esté más capacitado o incluso, si de verdad es algo que deseas hacer, sugerir un momento futuro en el que si puedas realizarlo.
En este caso, podría sugerir algo así: «No voy a poder ser el presentador de esta mesa redonda, sin embargo, conozco a esta persona la cual no solo es muy reconocido en el sector, sino que también tiene experiencia haciendo de presentador en eventos similares.”
Proporciona una Razón, Pero No te Justifiques en Exceso
La última de las formas para decir “no” es ofreciendo una breve explicación del motivo para que la otra parte entienda tu posición, pero no te extiendas sobreexcusándote. Esto puede hacer que sientas necesario justificarte por tu decisión, lo cual no es cierto. Recuerda que tus prioridades y tu tiempo son algo que solo tu debes gestionar.
Recuerda que estas tres formas son facilitadores, puedes hacerlos tuyos, pero siguen siendo trucos. El principal objetivo es que estés capacitado para decir que no a aquello que no quieras hacer, respetando siempre a la otra parte.
Conclusión
Antes de finalizar el post de hoy, permíteme ofrecerte estos consejos extra. Trata siempre de ser directo a la hora de decir que no, considero que dar falsas esperanzas es igual de perjudicial que aceptar a ciegas todas las peticiones que te hagan.
Aunque no quieras realizar aquello que te soliciten y decidas emplear los métodos mencionados anteriormente, mantén tu cortesía. En la mayoría de casos podrás serlo y además de esta forma suavizaras la negativa.
